Resumo

This scientific article aims to discuss the institution of the jury system, providing a brief analysis of its historical evolution within the Brazilian legal framework, while examining the practical implications of constitutional principles such as the full defense, the sovereignty of verdicts, and the jurisdiction to try intentional crimes against life. Subsequently, the application will be based on a specific case, which is the homicide of the American missionary Dorothy Stang. This episode goes beyond a mere analysis of the crime itself and broadens the horizons to discuss the role of social actors (social movements, the press, and the political class) in shaping a consensus on the crime to be submitted to the jury. The article presents the problem statement: "How did the murder of Dorothy Stang reverberate in the Brazilian political and social landscape, and what were the implications caused by the media on the structure of the accusatory system?" The selected methodology included a bibliographic review and systematic review, allowing for a comprehensive and detailed approach. The research concludes that the murder of Dorothy Stang reverberated in the Brazilian political and social landscape by exposing the violence and impunity related to agrarian conflicts and by promoting a debate on the need for reforms in the justice system.
